When the Bible talks about the church, it means the church community—the group of people in one place who trust in Jesus. So when the Bible describes the church as a pillar and buttress of the truth, it’s talking about the church community supporting and displaying the truth of the gospel in the way we interact with one another. The way we speak to each other, relate to teach other, and think of each other demonstrates the gospel to us and the world.

Application Questions

1. Think about the way you interact with the church community. What might that show you about your definition of what the church is? How does that definition match up to the definitions we’ve seen over the last few weeks: body, family, pillar?

2. What are some ways the church community functions as a pillar of the truth? How have you seen that at work personally?

3. How have you seen the truths of the gospel in verse 16 affect your life? Does that motivate you to support and display those truths to others?

4. What are some practical ways that you are supporting and displaying the truths of the gospel with other Christians? Is God showing you and other opportunities to support and display the truth with others?
